Rock-Soil Transition In Weathering Of A Porphyritic Biotite Granite

نویسندگان

چکیده

Concentric layers of weathered materials around core-stones show the porphyritic biotite granite to experience sequential, but gradational, changes in visible features, textures and mineralogy as it transforms from ‘rock’ into ‘soil’. The start with opening-up grain boundaries micro-cracks (stage 1) followed by their dark brown staining 2) subsequent alteration (to sericite clay minerals) groundmass plagioclase feldspar grains 3). Biotite flakes are then bleached altered chlorite 4) before there starts alkali 5) finally phenocrysts 6). Quartz not during these stages weathering, disaggregate reduce size due continual micro-cracks. Increasing weathering marked decreasing dry unit weights, densities uniaxial compressive strengths, increasing apparent porosities. transition between ‘soil’ occurs stage 6 when all plagioclase, most feldspar, have been some phenocrysts. Stage is large porosities (>18%) low values weight (<20.81 kN/m3), density (<2,122 kg/m3) strength (<1.8 MPa).

Weathering of Stone Mountain Granite

The weathering of Stone Mountain Granite (adamellitc) forms kaolinite, endcllite, allophane and gibbsite of which kaolinite is the most stable. Bulk density ranges from 2.65 in fresh rock to a minimum of 1.48 in saprolite. It is a good index of weathering. Abrasion pH ranges from 5.0 in saprolite to 9.3 in fresh rock, and is direct]y related to bulk density and the amount of clay mineral. Among...

Granite rock outcrops: an extreme environment for soil nematodes?

We studied soil nematode communities from the surface of granite flatrock outcrops in the eastern Piedmont region of the United States. The thin soils that develop here experience high light intensity and extreme fluctuations in temperature and moisture and host unique plant communities. We collected soils from outcrop microsites in Virginia (VA) and North Carolina (NC) in various stages of suc...

Chemical weathering on the Carnmenellis granite

The behaviour of 25 major and trace elements, together with mineral changes, has been examined in a deep weathering profile on the Cammenellis granite, Cornwall. The bulk chemical and mineralogical composition of the regolith shows only minor changes from the parent rock indicating a low degree of chemical weathering. However, within the regolith marked differences occur between the fine fracti...

Batch dissolution of granite and biotite in water: Implication for fluorine geochemistry in groundwater

We performed batch dissolution experiments on different sized granite and biotite in pure water, in order to better understand the source and geochemical behavior of fluoride in groundwater. Very high concentrations of fluoride (up to 6–10 mg/l) were observed from granite leaching. Correlations between leached ions suggest that fluoride possibly originates from dissolution of biotite. After ~50...

Decay patterns of granite stones in Braga monuments (NW Portugal)

The decay features of thirty-nine monuments built with granite stones and presenting diverse architectural characteristics, date of construction and environment characteristics (including exposition conditions, traffic intensity, etc) are compare in order to discuss decay patterns and susceptibility of granite types applied in architectural works. Decay patterns of biotite-rich medium to fine-g...
